MarkAllison New user Hemel Hempstead, England 53 Posts | 0 One thing that I have noticed from reading the likes of Corinda, Waters, Richardson, Lesley etc. is that a lot of references seem to be made to The Jinx, a magazine produced by Theodore Annemann. The Jinx is available in book form in three volumes. Can anyone tell me if they're worth getting? Is it all mentalism, or is there a mixture of magic and mentalism? Is the material fairly strong, or is it somewhat dated now? Cheers Mark

MarkAllison New user Hemel Hempstead, England 53 Posts | 0 They are available in the UK from Magic Books By Post http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages......t004.htm Each volume costs GBP 22.50. But are they worth buying Cheers Mark
Alex Reeve New user 63 Posts | 0 Oh yes they are worth buying!! there is a lot of material in those volume from many creative minds. You can do some of the tricks directly out of the book and amaze your audience. some others need to be adapted for more modern audiences. It is also very interesting about the history of our art. Because it contains also a lot of tricks that were the base of modern tricks. Also you can see also how the war influence the way they performed (the jinx was published before and during WWII). this is an interersting anectode: in one of the early Jinx (I can't remeber which one right now) Anneman gave a comment where he said that he found the nazi's politic interesting because the nazis punished magicians who exposed tricks (Anneman hated exposure) then later of course he realised that it was a mistake. So yes go and run get your volumes of the jinx, you will not regret it!
Robert LAMAR New user Lakeside, Nova Scotia (Canada) 75 Posts | 0 I concur with Alex Reeve. 'The Jinx' is a MUST have. It is an invaluable resource. Also available is 'The New Jinx.' Although not as good as the original, there is still a lot of material worthy of consideration. I would also throw into the mix, 'The Phoenix' in six volumes. Though containing more magic then mentalism, it is still an invaluable resource to help get one's 'creative juices' flowing. Ask Max Maven what he thinks of these two encyclopedic works! Thoughtreader Inner circle Calgary, Alberta, Canada 1565 Posts | 0 They do tend to be 'dry' reading but for the price of the books, you really cannot beat it. Many brilliant pieces within the pages and even some complete acts. There is also a follow-up book (so to speak) titled 'The New Jinx' which was an attempt to recreate the old magic but it only lasted a few years and while it does have some interesting things in it, it is not to the same standard as the original. Still worth taking a look though. If it is 'mental' material you are lookingfor, the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Mentalism (three volumes) are also a very good collection of some of the best 'thinking' in mental material and nothing can compete with a complete collection of 'Magick'. Mind you, if you had Jinx, Magick, Invocation, Pentagram,Swami, Seance, Stunners, you would never need anything else and would have enough good material to give you something new and substantial to work on every day. Ian Rowland Special user London 876 Posts | 1 I bought all three Vols of The Jinx a long time ago, and found them absolutely compelling reading. The material is predominantly cards and mentalism, but the mentalism material is more or less essential. Well worth the money, and a solid investment.
Allen Gittelson Regular user San Francisco 145 Posts | 1 The Jinx is something I consider to be essential reading. It is often difficult to find an effect that is not in The Jinx in some form or other. I see tons of magic tricks being released all the time, and in a large majority of the cases, I could tell you the specific trick in The Jinx that it is based upon and in many cases there is not a distinguishable difference between the version in The Jinx and the 'new' trick. The other comments made here are also quite applicable. By reading all of the contents of The Jinx (that is everything, and not just the tricks) it helps to understand historically what was going on and what the environment was like at the time. Through this reading you will see that many things that people grapple with today are not new issues, but were concerns of that time as well. Examples of these issues are exposure, copying of other people's materials, who originated what, excitement about new things, rediscovering older things that have not been used much for a long time, etc. For example: as a mentalist, I can tell you it is incredible how often I find references back to Jinx #1, and particularly The Mystery at the Blackboard. The glance back idea is used all over the place in mentalism and other things. The Jinx is great food for thought and thorough analysis will also show a number of great thinkers, workers, and performers, that you may not know of otherwise. I learned through The Jinx of such greats as Stewart James, Al Baker, Orville Meyer, Dunninger, Ted Annemann (of course), and the list just goes on. In short, The Jinx is a wonderful resource, and I'm often surprised at how many people are not aware of it and its contents. It's a steal of a deal as well at the price. John Smetana ???? - 2009 499 Posts | 0 I can only second the opinion of other posters regarding 'The Jinx'.An absolute must have for your library. I found the editorials by Annemann especially interesting. There are many gems to be found in the pages of this great publication and stuff that magicians of today are unfamiliar with. A mentalist friend of mine and I recently blew away the guys at the 'Legendary 13' using something from the Jinx. A lot of really good stuff is in those hard to read pages. MarkAllison New user Hemel Hempstead, England 53 Posts | 0 Thanks for all the advice. The Jinx is now top of my shopping list I'd also be interested in obtaining Magick (I assume that this is not Mind, Myth and Magick by T A Waters) and the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Mentalism. Does anyone know where I can get hold of them (preferably in the UK, but elsewhere if no UK dealers stock them). Cheers Mark
Thoughtreader Inner circle Calgary, Alberta, Canada 1565 Posts | 0 MAGICK was reprinted by Collector's Workshop and it is NOT cheap and is not actually the complete set but well worth it if you can obtain it. If you come across an actual complete set of MAGICK, buy it!!!!!! Encyclopedic Dictionary of Mentalism is a three volume (in three ring binder) set that used to be carried by Magic Books by Post. If not, it is published through Hades Publications and can be purchased directly through them or any other reputable dealer like H & R Books, Hank Lee, Steven's Magic, etc... MarkAllison New user Hemel Hempstead, England 53 Posts | 0 My set of The Jinx books arrived last week, and I must thank everyone who convinced me to get them. They are wonderful. Not only is there some wonderful material in there, some of Annemann's editorials are delightful to read and provide some wonderful insights in to how magic was performed in the 30's and 40's. Another thing for which I was unprepared is that rather than all of the content being re-formatted using modern DTP / Publishing techniques, the pages appear to be exact reproductions of the original pages - something which gives the books an extra charm, although it does make the pages slightly less readable. The only negative that I can give is to offer the sternest of warnings with regard to the effect that The Jinx may have on your marriage. I have had my head stuck in the Jinx for days and the wife's becoming a bit annoyed. Cheers Mark
